VIRGILIO VILLORESI

If you could be whatever you want to be, what would you be?
I’d never want to lose my inner child. Childlike magic and a sense of wonder are the basis of my work.

Tell us about your five favorite habits.
1) I like to collect strange objects. In my new apartment I have created a sort of Wunderkammer where I display old vintage tops, dolls’ eyes, insects inside resins, etc.
2) I love watching 16mm movies from my old Fumeo projector. Mainly animated and experimental films. For example, I recently bought a set of Norman McLaren’s NFB reels.
3) I love going to 50’s taverns and vintage bars.
4) I love creating collages out of yellowed magazines from the 50’s.
5) I like to drive around in my vintage car a Fiat 1100 Special.

A statement or phrase that describes you?
Fantasmagoria

Do you feel in love?
I’m in love with dreams, the creative force that allows you to create worlds that do not exist and get excited by the evolution of a work of art.

Why have you decided to pursue a career in the world of moving picture?
Since I was a child I created puppet theaters and enjoyed showing them to my family. I guess I chose the world of moving picture due to a natural inclination toward wonder and magic.

Which director is a source of inspiration for you?
I would say Karel Zeman for his marvelous staging of Mélièsian, Kenneth Anger and his vision and esoteric and Fellini for his unique ability to represent dreams.

What do you think about the relationship between fashion and cinema? To your mind, in what ways could fashion film help both industries?
I think that there has always been a great exchange between fashion and cinema. Nowadays fashion films are considered real cinematographic works and I think this is the result of a great collaboration between brands and directors who propose new perspectives.

Looking back, is there a particular job or story you would like to share?
When I look back I certainly think of my first works like “Frigidaire” or “J”, works made in total autonomy, with practically no budget. In fact, I’m particularly proud of those videos because they are proof that even without any means you can realize excellent works.

Is there a person, company or group you would like to meet and work with?
Right now the only thing on my mind is my debut film, but I don’t want to reveal too much because I’ m superstitious.

How do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years I hope to maintain the enthusiasm and the feeling of surprise I have for my creations.

Tell us something about your experience at Fashion Film Festival Milano.
Ever since the festival was launched, it has been a great stimulus for me to improve and surpass myself, because in every job I do there is a little bit of the thought of potentially making a video that will please the jury and the viewers of the FFF. It’s a festival that has grown so much year after year and I think it’s one of the most prestigious festivals a director can aspire to.
