NICK GILBERG

If you could be whatever you want, what would you be?

It might sound a bit cheesy but I’d love to feel the freedom a Dolphin does. I crave that obviously this is an idealized perspective as Dolphins have a very serious time in the ocean these days specially in waters where they are hunted.

Can you talk about your 5 favourite habits?

Spending time with my wife Juli, visiting exhibitions, spending time in the water, working on creative briefs and learning new things.

A statement or a maxima that describes you

Be like a swan. Calm on the surface, but always paddling strongly underneath.

Do you feel in love?

Most definitely.

Why have you chosen to develop a career in the world of moving image?

Editing gives me a taste of that super power because I can retune those outcomes, I can calibrate the intensity of each moment, heighten the power of the intended outcome and even change how the story actually unfolds.

Which director is a source of inspiration for you?

I think it’s difficult to choose one person because there are so many I learn from who have completetely different approaches. At the moment I find the most inspiring influencers to be Chris Cunningham, Walter Campbell, Viola and Brackage.

What do you think about the relation between Fashion and Cinema? In what way do you think fashion film could help both industries?

They both coincide in a very graceful way. I think fashion films are opening up new ways of expressing feelings through performance, and they are a great space for people to experiment, which I’m sure influences cinema.

Look back at your past experiences: do you have a particular job or story to share with us?

Being caught completely off guard with a question, while receiving the editing award at the Fashion Film Festival Milano, which was “How did you do this?”. I wish I could go back in time to answer that question more clearly, although I’m still not sure I know exactly where I would start.

Do you have a special figure, a company or a group you would like to meet and work with?

I would love to meet up with the editing company Rock Paper and Scissors and David Fincher; they both have something in common, and that’s very cool work.

How do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully I will be happily editing away in a dark room with 3D surround sound and a stone throw away from my family on a beach.

Tell us something about your experience at Fashion Film Festival Milano.

Thank you!!
